We don’t keep your address
Looking up your representatives shouldn’t mean handing over where you live. Here is exactly what happens.
When you look up an address
- The address goes from your browser to our server in the body of a request — never in a web address — and from our server to the U.S. Census Bureau’s geocoder, which returns district numbers.
- We don’t save it to a database, file, cache or log, and we don’t put it in the page you land on. The results page’s link contains only a state and district numbers.
- Error messages are logged without the address.
- The Census Bureau receives the address to answer the lookup; its own privacy policy applies to that request.
When you look up a ZIP code
ZIP lookups are answered entirely from public Census data we keep on our server. Nothing is sent anywhere else.
When you join the interest list
“Tell me when there’s news about my reps” stores your email address and ZIP code — nothing more. No name, no street address, no IP address. We’ll use it only to tell you about news alerts for your representatives when they launch, and every message will include a one-click unsubscribe. We don’t sell or share the list.
Abuse protection
To stop automated abuse, we count lookups and signups per visitor for one minute using a one-way keyed hash of the network address. The counter can’t be turned back into an address and expires on its own.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics (through Google Tag Manager) to count page views. Because addresses never appear in our page addresses or titles, they never reach analytics. You can block analytics with any standard content blocker and the site works the same.
Cookies
We set two small cookies that protect our forms against forgery. Their contents live in your browser, encrypted; we keep no server-side session for visitors.
